The origins of crystalline porcelain date back to the
late Ming Dynasty (circa 1650AD). It's not that the ancient Chinese
understood or even knew about crystalline glazes. It's just that
pieces from that period that are extant today, show evidence of
macro-crystallization.
It wasn't until the late 1800's that systematic
attempts, for commercial purposes, were made to produce
macro-crystallization in a ceramic glaze. In 1897 the Sevres Porcelain
Factory, under the direction of Taxile Doat, began to explore the
esthetic possibilities of crystalline porcelain.
